Dr. Franz J. Laimboeck

Vice President, Research & Advanced Development

Dr. Laimboeck heads the R&D arm of EcoMotors, where he and his team work on rethinking and refining internal combustion engines and their capabilities for power output, fuel economy and emissions cleanliness.

The inner workings of small, power-dense engines have always held a particular fascination for Dr. Laimboeck. He focused this interest first in competition as a motorcycle racer in his native Austria, where he became 500 cc national champion in 1975. Since then, his passion has evolved into a profession, and a distinguished career as a development engineer, university professor and researcher.

Dr. Laimboeck holds a Masters degree (Dipl.-Ing.) in mechanical engineering, and a Doctorate in technology (Dr.techn.) with distinction, from the Technical University of Graz, Austria, where he also achieved habilitation qualification (Univ.-Dozent) as a full professor.

  • Head of R&D and Senior Engineer at Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Graz, Austria.
  • Founder and head of the Two-Wheeler & Small Engine Division at the Technical University of Graz.
  • Department head and full professor of Automotive Engineering at Da-Yeh Institute of Technology in Taiwan.
  • Consultant to Yamaha Motor Europe.
  • Department Vice-President and head of the Compact Engines & 2-Wheelers product line at AVL in Graz, Austria.
  • Program Director for Spark Ignition Powertrains at the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas.
  • Holder of more than 100 patents and patent applications.
